Restored Ferret Scout Recon Light Armoured Vehicle - Mk I

Rescued from a country shed, this ferret has had extensive cosmetic restoration. All that was removable was pulled apart and then thoroughly processed until it looked as new. While we only have the word of the farmer who owned them as to mechanical working condition being “good”, he did advise that it had a brake problem.

The ferret (except for the smoke launchers) appears complete. It stands on car jacks in a specially constructed shed and has been on exhibit there for the past 8 years (with batteries removed). The engine is cranked by hand regularly to ensure eventual start and compression seems fine. Sold AS IS, we recommend inspection by a qualified mechanic.

This is a Fully Restored Ferret Scout Recon Light Armoured Vehicle - Originally Mk I, now Mk II

This Ferret was rescued from a farm shed where it was regularly used by the owner farmer as an occasional roustabout. This Ferret MK1 was fully operational when purchased. However, it required a serious clean up including fumigation, of white tailed spiders, redback spiders and 2 weeks of scraping the floor of an inch of chicken droppings! Once that was done, it still needed a further week of thorough steam cleaning.

Prior to purchase, the farmer took me on a very wild ride, up and down hills and ridges while hanging on for dear life to prove that the Ferret was running!

This ferret’s overall condition required our care and undivided attention. It’s restoration took 4 years of nearly constant attention to detail where ALL parts were taken apart, then stripped, sanded, rust-proofed and protected with the best products available. Seats were redone, new foam and trim cut and restored to as new condition. All suspension was checked, joints were oiled, the engine was restored cosmetically, batteries removed and electricals disconnected. Once finished, it was then taken to a purposely-built hangar/museum, placed on jacks and covered. Although the ferret has not been driven or started since its purchase, it is regularly cranked by hand to ensure its start when re-activated by its new owner.

Last year, I purchased a turret which I have placed on this ferret as a tribute to the detailing work that this ferret deserved. It now proudly stands as a MK11 and can be admired by viewing the recent photographs on ebay.

Ferret Scout Recon Light Armoured Vehicle - Mk I

This Ferret was purchased five years ago as a restoration project. It is thought to have been previously on static display as the engine was (and still is) immobile and parts were missing such as the rear observer seat and the air cleaner. The engine itself appears to be fairly complete but it lacks the original spark plugs.

Cosmetic restoration was initiated by a thorough steam-cleaning of all of the exterior/interior, removing internal accessories such as battery boxes, map containers, etc., and giving the ferret a 3-fold rust proofing (Wattyl rust and paint protector was used).

Unfortunately, this project has had to be abandoned due to illness and the ferret’s present condition can be seen by viewing the photographs on the ebay listing. This vehicle remains protected and is covered on car jacks at the rear of the present owners’ home.

About Ferret Scouts:
The Ferret Scout cars were introduced and developed in 1952 as replacements for earlier scout cars in Britain. Production ended in 1971 and 4,409 were produced and issued. Approx. 40 countries used the Ferret Scout Car since it was issued, in Northern Ireland in the 50's, in Egypt at the Suez Canal in the 60's and in Cyprus (United Nations) in the 70's. The British Army thought so highly of the Ferret Scout Cars that they took 40 "out of mothballs" and re-furbished them for use in the first Gulf War.

Ferret Scout Armoured Cars - For Sale

An Australian Military Collector is selling his lifetime collection of FOUR restored Ferret Recon Mk 1 and Mk 2 Scout cars (Ferrets A, B, C, D) and a spare Mk 1 Ferret (Ferret E - not currently serviceable). In addition, is his collection of hundreds of brand new (in grease) genuine Rolls Royce parts for the Ferrets.

The Ferrets have been carefully restored over many years with all body parts being stripped and tested in a four step total anti-rust system then re-painted. The most prized item in the collection is undoubtedly the Ferret "D" Mk 2, which is absolutely complete with smoke launchers, periscope, new tyres and complete military radio fitted inside.

The Mk2 Ferrets (A and D) were fully operational and driveable when stored while the two Mk1 Ferrets (B and C) need some brake work and minor adjustments.

All Ferrets were placed directly into store (in their current location in Adelaide, South Australia) after restoration five years ago and the engines are cranked by hand regularly to ensure their eventual restart.

The Ferret parts are all new in grease, boxed and numbered and include some now unobtainable items. For example, the complete gearbox in original case, new electrical components, plugs, fuel tank, tracta joints. All parts are collated and detailed in an extensive 17 page inventory including Part Number and original Army Number.

Manuals, together with a set of original driving manuals, campaign repair manuals, field manuals and base repair manuals are also available. Rolls Royce manuals of complete engine takedown and repair for the military 6 cylinder motor as fitted to the Ferret Mk1 and Mk2 is an extremely rare inclusion in this collection and is completed by a huge individual army catalogue of every part and corresponding visual sketch with corresponding numbers. Every spare part is then matched to this catalogue (in the 17 page inventory).
